First displayed at last year's IAA CV Show in Hannover, the concept van revealed a variety of solutions intended to reduce the overall fuel consumption by 1.51it/100krn (nearly 20mpg). Some, including the ECOGear transmission and engine stop-start have moved across to the latest Sprinter, hut others are still further away.
Flat underfloor panelling and a smooth radiator grille aid aerodynamics, but create new problems of managing heat from the engine and transmission. Other features such as rear view cameras replacing door mirrors, LED lighting front and rear, and more advanced aerodynamic devices have definite fuel economy benefits, but also bring major cost implications that are not welcome in a recession.
