• As the belly tank row rumbles on, the French government has asked the European Commission to arbitrate on whether the ban on retro-fitted supplementary tanks is justified. And it looks increasingly likely that the Commission will side with the French.
A decision by Brussels to back the French would dismay UK inter national hauliers because it would force up their operating costs. To fill up in Italy. for example, costs at least 40% more than using bunkered fuel bought in Britain.
