Offenders are watching deliveries going into warehouses. They then telephone the warehouse, posing as the consignor and telling staff that the delivery is incorrect or required elsewhere.
They tell staff they will send a courier van to collect it and a local courier is contracted on a cash-ondelivery basis to collect the load and return it to a non-existent address in East London, usually Romford or Barking.
When the courier can't find the address he will call the thieves who send out their own vehicle and arrange for a vehicle-to-vehicle transfer.
DS Mark Hooper says: The courier isn't concerned as he is being paid for the job. I would urge anyone who receives these sorts of calls to have them verified by fax or e-mail rather than rely on a semiplausible mobile telephone call."
