• Two drivers who were made redundant from Cert's Cumbernauld depot have lost their claims for unfair dismissal before a Glasgow Industrial Tribunal.
Evidence was given that the company had been unable to reach agreement with the Trans

port and General Workers' Union over the criteria for selection. They had rejected the union's suggestion of last in, first out, preferring to select those to be made redundant on a "best team" basis. They were to an extent dependent upon their drivers as "ambassadors".
The two drivers, Samuel Flanagan and Peter Gay, both scored relatively lowly compared with the others.
The tribunal said it was satisfied that the company had acted reasonably. It had consulted the union as far as it could and had done all it reasonably could to reach agreement with the union. Having failed, it then went about things in its own way.
The Tribunal felt that the criteria used had been fair and reasonable.
