The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) of 1994 proposed easier travel for trucks between Mexico and the United States. At first the changes were restricted to California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, but in January next year the "single market" will become fully active, and cross-border traffic will increase significantly.
However, travel still won't be completely unrestricted: the US authorities are introducing strict new border controls and extensive new sites have been devel
oped to carry out Customs inspections and Department of Transport safety checks.
The Veterans' Memorial Bridge one of three border crossings over the Rio Grande in Brownsville, Texas, will become substantially busier; regular users already include vehicle Component manufacturer Trico, which runs a "shuttle" service between plants in the US and Mexico several times each day.
