DESIGNED for the haulage of heavy and outsize loads, the articulated outfit shown in the accompanying illustration has just been completed by Cranes (Derehana), Ltd., which specializes in the construction of such vehicles. One of its first tasks was the transport of a mechanical excavator weighing 17 tons, from Southall to Hendon. For the tractor unit, the operators, • Messrs. Cliffords, of Brentford, Middlesex, chose an A.E.C. Matador oilengined chassis.
Capable of carrying loads such as the excavator shown, as well as I a rge transformers, boilers, etc., the vehicle is primarily designed for end loading, a process which is achieved by removing the rear wheels and lowering the trailer frame to the ground by means of jacks. The removal of the axle, brakes and spring assembly is a simple operation, needing no more than the withdrawal of two pins and the turning over of two spring trunnion blocks, one on each short axle. When the load is in position and the frame again jacked up, the' replacement of the wheels can be just as easily accomplished. The method employed is patented and is usually applied to vehicles of large capacity having two short axles oscillating transversely to the .ground contour. Its application to a unit having a single rear aide, as in this case, is particularly interesting.
