THE CITY of London Corporation will soon apply to the GLC for an order to restrict unladen lorries to a 5-ton weight limit. This will mean that some 4,000 of the heaviest lorries using Tower Bridge each day will have to find alternative routes.
The Corporation is also finalising work on the realignment of the bridge's kerbs to prevent two lines of traffic in each direction.
It is hoped these measures will stop heavy lorries shaking the bridge, causing excessive vibrations in the main structure and lifting mechanism.
