FOUR TRUCK drivers banned from driving after smuggling over £500,000 worth of contraband cigarettes into the UK have had their bans reduced so they can start new j obs.
John Wright of Dudley and James Perkins of Worcester were jailed; Harry Skitt and Charles Merrin both given community sentences for importing fake Benson & Hedges; all four men also received lengthy driving bans.
At the Court of Appeal Mr Justice Field heard that all four have jobs ready for them to walk into as soon as they get their licences back. He cut all four of their driv Mg bans. Perkins' ban was reduced from five to two years; Wright's from three years to one year; Merrin's was halved to 9 months; and Skitt's cut from 18 months to six.
Field concluded: "It is desirable for the rehabilitation of the offenders that they may be in a position to work."
