Cybit's Fleetstar-Online solution costs from £20 per vehicle per month for a basic, entry-level service that provides historical activity reports on a regular basis without any on-screen tracking. A more typical package for a goods vehicle operator that wanted to see live tracking might be ELIO per vehicle per month, according to Cybit sales director John Wisdom,
These figures typically include equipment supply and installation and even communication costs for the basic telematics data to be sent back to Cybit's servers, assuming GPRS is used. Exact costs will vary depending on fleet size and contract length, stresses Wisdom, and additional voice or messaging costs would obviously add to the running costs.
All the same, a 1 0-vehicle fleet might
cost around £400 a month for the telematics provision -or E4,800 a year.
Assuming a typical fleet insurance premium for a medium sized fleet of £3,500 per vehicle per year, a 16% rebate from Norwich Union would be worth 25,600 on a 10-vehicle fleet putting EST in the vehicle operator's pocket while still giving them the benefit of the telematics data and NU's risk management reports.
That telematics data, adds Wisdom, should allow them to drive further efficiencies and cost savings into their operation -for example, from reports on timesheets and vehicle usage. "If you can't drive some productivity improvements into your business out of that, then you're either running a very tight ship already or you're being a bit superficial with it," he says.
