• The Aeconoguide piston developed by T & N Technology and used in the Ford 2.5-litre diesel engine has won a 1989 British Design Award.
The piston is fitted with three raised pads on its skirt which reduce energy losses from friction by reducing the contact between the skirt and the cylinder wall. This can improve either fuel consumption or engine power by 2-3%.
Ford began fitting Aeconoguide pistons in September fast year; now it uses 40,000 of them every month. The Aeconoguide is also used in the Citroen AX11, the Peugeot 205, and the Daewoo Motors 1.5litre petrol engine.
In this country the piston is produced by Bradford-based Hepworth and Grandage; in France by AE France, and in Korea by Dongsuh Industrial.
