road and rail freight interchange is to be built just outside Durham.
The local authority-hacked scheme is at Bowburn, south of Durham city. near the east coast main line and the Al.
A spokesman for Durham County Council says it believes the use of long-distance rail freight will increase, particularly to and from the Continent.
"Increased restrictions on lorry drivers' hours, a shortage of
I-16V drivers, increasing road congestion, rising fuel prices and new road-user charging are likely to push more freight onto rail,he predicts.
But he adds that because parts of journeys will still need to he by road the interchange is in a good position to be the leading regional site in the North-East.
Planning applications from two developers are expected to be considered by the city council in the next few weeks.
