PAY-AS-YOU-DRIVE insurance and a satellite-based road-user charge system will become the norm by 2010, according to a new German-based traffic management company.
Satellic Traffic Management is part of T-Systems, which was involved in setting up the German Maut toll system. It predicts that the elect ronics needed to drive this t echnology will become integrated into vehicle designs, becoming as common as air bags.
At the moment most road charging systems are microwavebased and have limited applications, while satellite-based systems also allow tracking and interfacing with the vehicle.
This technology has been applied in Germany since January 2005 with reported accuracy of 99%; UK trials are under way.
