PROTESTS against the high toll charges and usage restrictions on the Connel Ferry rail-road bridge were made last week at a meeting, in Bender„ loch, of farmers, crofters, estate proprietors and other residents drawn from the 40-mile sfretch of country between Connel and Kinlochleven.
Mr. John Baird„ who presided, said the meeting had been called in order that as strong a case as possible might be presented to the Department of Agriculture for Scotland, the Secretary of State for Scotland, and the Minister of War Transport for the abolition of the conditions which were hindering' food production in the area.
Major Duncan McCallum, M.P., said he believed further concessions would be granted by the railway company, but what was wanted was the freedom of the.bridge for road transport during the war. Free passage, he contended, should be allowed for the transport of livestock and farm supplies by lorry.
Evidence was given by many of those present concernihg specific instances where the bridge had hindered farm transport in the area. It was stated that it took about a week on one occasion for cattle purchased at the Oban sales to reach Benderloch by rail.
It was unanimously agreed to send a resolution to the North Argyllshire Agricultural Executive Committee calling on the Government to abolish the restrictions on the bride during the war.
