JERSEY Docks and Harbour Board alhas declined to accept responsibility for the insurance of goods deposited by hauliers in the " smalls" transit depot, fur= later clearance I.)y outward-bound ships.
Small consignments for shipment by various vessels, or reqUired at export berths on differing dates, may be sent to the.depot, from which they are subsequently delivered by local transport to the export berth, as required by the shipping companies. The haalier has to pay a fee to the. Docks Board for the use of the depot.
What the haulier objects to is that he is made responsible for the goods white they are lying in the depot and until they are delivered to the ship. Hence the suggestion that the Docks Board, as the owner of the depot, should take out an insurance cover— a floating policy—and adjust the depot charges to meet the cost of the preMium. A committee of the. Board which has bad this matter under con= sideration has-now decided that, having regard to the limited cover and the responsibilities which would be incurred, it could not recommend the Board to accept the proposed form of -insurance.
The transport committee of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce has referred this decision to the Road Transport Section of the Liverpool Shipping and Forwarding Agents' Association for its observations.
