THE crippled widow of a haulier was carried into court at Leeds, on Monday, to give evidence before the Yorkshire Licensing Authority in support of an application. The applicant, Bee and Jay Transport, Ltd., Bradford, sought permission to take over from the widow, Mrs. L. Akins, of Humbolt Street, Bradford, a vehicle operated under an A. licence.
Mr. F. G. Bibbings, A.R.O. York
shire Area secretary, for the applicant, said that the company wished to purchase from Mrs. Akins the business and vehicle which had belonged to her husband, Mr. T. Akins, who died. on May 8 last, and in whose name tho licence stood. Because of the disability which crippled her, Mrs. Akins was unable to carry on the business. In effect, it had been carried on since Mr. Akins's death by Bee and Jay TraIlSport, Ltd., which had served Mr. Akins's clients.
Mr. F. Blanchard, of Bee and Jay Transport Ltd., said he was satisfied that the vehicle he wished to buy from Mrs. Akins wap worth repairing. The purchase price was made up of £5 for the vehicle and £45 for the goodwill of the business. Giving evidence, Mrs. Akins said that her husband's business was established 49 years ago, with horses. It had always brought them a good living.
The Licensing Authority, in granting the application, said he would accept Mrs. Akins's evidence that the vehicle had been in sufficient use to earn a livelihood for its owner.
A.R.O. Yorkshire Area officials have made a strong protest against the holding of a public inquiry into this application: which was made under Section 11 (3) (b) of the 1933 Act. The Authority refused to hold a private investigation at his office. The protest was made "on humanitarian grounds."
