WAGE rises are blamed for increases
V in fares sought by Edinburgh Corporation and the Potteries Motor Traction Co., Ltd. Another municipal undertaking which wants higher rates is Portsmouth.
An estimated £118,000 a year is expected from a proposal by Edinburgh Transport Committee to reduce the number of stages at present covered by the 2d, fare from three to two, Other measures designed to help meet the transport department's deficit of £151,900 include cutting the 5d. fare by Id. as an incentive to people in outlying districts, and the withdrawal of the 6d. early-morning return rate.
The abolition of workmen's fares and increased charges for adults' season tickets on the transport department's services have been suggested by Portsmouth City Council.
In the proposals put forward by P.M.T., one of the main suggestions is that early morning fares up to 6d. be increased by Id. They are also seeking approval to withdraw concessions given to shift workers.
Mr. C. W. Wroth, general manager, estimated that the proposals, if approved, would bring in approximately .£60,000 a year.
COLOMBIA CONTROL TRANSPORT
THE Government of Colombia have
taken powers to control road transport by declaring it a public service to be conducted only by registered enterprises to which all goods and passenger vehicles must be affiliated. Rates are to be approved and the operation of all companies supervised by a National Transport and Public Services Department.
A German company have offered to supply 80 buses to Bogota municipality on five-year credit terms.
MOVES TOWARDS A STANDARD PALLET
PRO6RESS was made towards the international standardization of pallets at 1'2.0 week's meeting IA the pallets committee of the International
a30 Organization for Standardization in London, which was attended by delegates from nine countries.
It was agreed that the minimum height from the ground to the underside of the top deck of a pallet should be 5 in. and the minimum height for the entry of the forks from any side 31, in. The width of wing on wing-type pallets should be 31 in., and the minimum rating for pallets of 32 in. by 40 in, and
40 in. by 48 in. should be 1,000 kg. and the minimum stacking load 4,000 kg.
Some matters were left over for consideration at the next meeting, which will be in Amsterdam in a few months' time.
