Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Seen in the recently commissioned anechoic engine noise test chamber during the first Ricardo open day on Wednesday, a Perkins V8 605 naturally aspirated diesel is reputed to develop 215 bhp (BS AU 141 rating) at 2600 rpm. It has a bore of 4.25in. and a stroke of 4.5in. and is a development of the Perkins V8 510 diesel which develops 170 bhp at 2800 rpm.

Various noise reducing measures have been applied to the engine which reduce its noise level from 94 dBA to 92 dBA. According to Ricardo technicians, full enclosure of an engine can provide a reduction of 8/12 dBA while the reduction provided by semi-enclosure is 4/6 dBA. Shielding various parts of the engine such as the tappet cover and sump can reduce the level by 3/6 dBA.
