• Furniture group MFI is to lay off 1,500 staff this year after pre-tax profits slumped 14% to £.60m. Jobs will be lost in all areas, including distribution.
However, new driving jobs should become available as the company expands its SouthEast home-delivery service to cover the whole country. By Christmas MFI's branch warehouses will be replaced by Home Delivery Centres.
Scottish textiles giant Dawson International is closing factories in Galashiels, Berwick and Kinross with the loss of 720 jobs.
