Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The safety of forwardcontrol light vans and minibuses is being examined by the Department of Transport. These vehicles are exempt from Type Approval crash tests, even though they are used to carry passengers as well as goods. Over the next 12 months the Transport and Road Research Laboratory will analyse information collated from police files containing details of fatal accidents.

Particular attention will be paid to injuries relating to the strength of the front of this type of vehicle, seat retention and fuel tank protection. To determine whether passenger protection is improving, the research will be compared to similar work completed two years ago. Longer-term research is expected to involve the Birmingham Accident Unit and Loughborough University.
