• The finance committee of the City and County of Newcastle upon Tyne rejected on Monday the recommendation of the highways, traffic and transport committee that Mr. J. B. Hurst be appointed general manager of Newcastle City Transport in succession to Mr. Frank S. Taylor, who is retiring (CM April 18).
Labour members of the committee, it is reported, attended the meeting in strength to ensure a Labour majority, which contended that with the impending appointment of a director-general for the new Tyneside PTE (the post has been advertised) the appointment of a new g.m. for the city's transport undertaking at this stage was unnecessary.
Cllr. Neville Trotter told CM on Tuesday that the full council (which is Tory-controlled) will reverse the decision of the finance committee at the earliest opportunity.
