• A Barry-based Hazchem operator has become the first tanker firm in Wales to gain the Investors in People standard.
BAT International, part of French chemical transport giant Groupe Samat, joins about 25 hauliers nationwide—and only three tanker operators—which have gained the award.
Lorna Shord, health and safety manager at the firm, says that its change from a family business to part of a multi-national group meant that it had to show that the foundations at BAT could be improved: "Communications was one of the key areas we didn't do particularly well, and also the training and develop ment of staff, which has only recently become more acceptable within the transport industry.
"Our staff were initially sceptical but have now taken to it very well and are much less worried about approaching managers with criticisms or ideas," she says.
Following the achievement Shard says the company will now attempt to roll out the standard at as other sites, including Sandbach, Manchester, Barnsley, Middlesbrough, irnmingham and London. The standard is designed to show that a company knows that to reach its aims and objectives it must invest in its staff and develop their skills.
