A MONGST the activities of James tt. Bartle and Co., Ltd., Lancaster Road, Notting Hill, London, W.11, the construction of passenger vehicle bodies of all types and sizes figures largely, and as an indication of the class of work which they undertake in this direction we can provide our readers with a few details of a 30-seater body which they have recently constructed and mounted on a Dennis chassis. The vehicle, which is shown in an accompanying illustration, is one of a number built to the order of the Griffin Motor Co., of Brynmawr, South Wales, and is of particular interest inasmuch as it constitutes the third repeat order received from this company. In this case the body is of the de luxe type, and the chassis on which it is fitted is the E type low load-line product of Dennis Bros., Ltd., Guildford.
The body is of the dual-entrance type, with a door at the front and another behind the rear-wheel arch, both being on the near side. The front door is operated from the driver's seat, and Can only be opened or closed by the driver, whereas the rear door can only be operated by the conductor, although it is fitted with a double-locking device which, in case of emergency, enables it to be manipulated from outside the vehicle. This, of course, is an important provision and one that is essential on public-service vehicles of this type. The interior of the vehicle is well appointed and is finished in a colour scheme of black and white, the roof being covered with lincrusta. The whole of the interior wiring for the lamps is concealed by wood fillets formed in the shape of an oval, thus making for neatness.
The subject of passenger comfort has received more than passing attention, and the seats, apart from being of the bucket type, are fitted with 10-in. cushions trimmed in real hand-buffed black leather. The backs of the seats are covered with carpeting having a black and white mottled appearance. All the interior fillets round the windows along the sides of the garnish rails, etc., are finished in black cellulose, and this also applies to the rear compartment, which is intended, in the main, for smokers. The purpose of the cellulose finish will, of course, be obvious.
The exterior of the vehicle is finished in a shade of mauve, the part above the waist-rail being in cream and the roof in white. The driver's position is alongside the engine and is entirely separate from the passenger compartment.
