A NEW series of single-axle 12 ton r-1 NEW semi-trailers has been introduced by the York Trailer Co. Ltd. There are two basic versions, the W2 with fifth-wheel coupling and the W2A
with automatic coupling. Lengths of from 22 ft. to 27 ft. in 1 ft. increments are available and the overall width of both models is 7 ft. 3 in.
The new models incorporate a frame design new to York. Main frame longitudinals are rolled-steel parallel-flange 1-section beams in the same high-tensile alloy as used for the York Teamster range introduced recently. Dimensions of the longitudinals are 10 in. by 5.75 in., reducing to 8 in. by 5-25 in. over the coupling area. The tops of the members are swept down from behind the coupling area to allow full-width crossmembers to be used. These are positioned at 2 ft. centres in the length and in standard form are of steel with light alloy optional. Outer rails are of rolled-steel channel and incorporate a chock rail as standard. although a completely flat floor can be had if desired. Depth of the outer rails is 7 in. on the W2 and 4in. on the W2A. Floor height above the centre line of the rear axle is 4 ft. 3 in.
Suspension on the new models follows the previous York practice employing slipper-mounted leaf springs located by rubber-bushed radiuS rods. Adjustment for axle alignment is provided. Braking is mechanical on the W2A whilst singleline vacuum is standard on the W2 with two-line air pressure optional. In all cases the brake sizes are 15-25 in. by 5 in.
List price of a 22 ft.-long unit is £685 for a W2A and £749 for a W2. Each additional foot in length costs £6. Unladen weight of a 26 ft.-long W2 is 2-ton 5 cwt.-, a W2A of the same length being 4 cwt. lighter,
