by Brian Weatherley • Iveco Ford will be offering a higher-torque, Euro-2 version of its 380hp 9.5litre straight-six engine in the EuroTech from April next year.
While the 8460.41L sixpot keeps a nominal 380hp rating, its torque goes up by 10% from 1,540Nm (1,1361bft) to 1,700Nm (1,2541bft) at just under 1,50Orpm.
The extra grunt comes from reprogramming the Bosch Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) fuel management system and changes to the combustion chamber and intake mani fold. A Euro-2 340hp version will be available in the EuroTech early next year.
From the second half of next year the EuroStar tractor will have a 470hp option of Iveco's 13.8-litre straight six, bridging the gap in the EuroStar power range between the 13.8litre at 420hp and the 17.2-litre vee-eight at 520hp.
The 470hp engine was unveiled at the recent Paris Show (CM 21-27 September). It will only be available in Euro-2 guise, to power 4x2 or twin-steer chassis.
To meet the tough emission regs, increase the power and deliver 2,100Nrn of torque, the 470hp engine has new "squeezecast" aluminium pistons with alu minium fibre inserts and a revised intake manifold to reduce turbulence.
The in-line six also features an improved combus tion chamber design and a wastegated Garett TBP 48 turbo-charger. All "470" engines get new injectors with 1,200bar injection pressure and Electronic Diesel Control (EDC).
To improve engine cooling a more efficient heat exchanger has been adopted—a new alloy sump increases the oil capacity.
Iveco is aiming the EuroStar 470 at time-sensitive international longhaul transport, offering more power without the weight penalty of its veeeight powered 520 tractor. It qualifies for six "Ecopoints" for Austrian Transit, I The Pan-European truck maker has confirmed that it has a number of vehicles running on operator trials with Eaton's latest S-Series 16-speed synchro box.
Iveco currently offers the 12-speed Twin Splitter box in its EuroTech/EuroStar range but could offer the S-Series towards the end of 1997.
