secretary who has an MBA. He started his working life as a lorry driver in 1972 and in 1983 he spent a year taking a business studies degree at Sheffield Polytechnic. He left his course to become a full-time officer with URTU and in 1992 was elected general secretary. He says that at that time the union was in a dire position in terms of membership and finances. This has now been turned round so that it is running in surplus and has a membership of 18,000. As well as being general secretary and helping his wife run a bed-and-breakfast he graduated in 1996 with an MBA from Manchester Business School,
