a by-pass on the notorious A66 in Cumbria has been backed by the Road Haulage Association.
The Temple Sowerby Action Group, representing the communities bisected by the highway, held a 'road crossing' demo onTuesday (31 August) to raise awareness for the need of a by-pass, which would cut the numbers of HGVs passing through local villages.
About 13,000 vehicles travel on the A66 every day. The RHA's Geoff Martin says it has campaigned for years for the single sections of the road to be upgraded to dual carriageways.
He says that from an operator's point of view dualling the road is "vitally important" — the biggest hurdle to overcome now is for funding to be allocated.
However, Martin adds: "Any delays that this demonstration causes will be regrettable, but we sympathise with residents who have waited for so long for their village to get its bypass."
