Ryder hasn't survived the recession by simply battening down the hatches: it is now offering a new service — all-marque retail maintenance through its network of 22 depots.
Hunt puts this news in context: "We think the truck pare will remain the same size, but the age profile will grow—and thus the importance of quality maitenance will become clear to all operators."
He notes that Ryder has national coverage, but that its not perfect. However, there will be no changes to its network (in the sense of openings and closures) until the recession is buried deep in the collective memory and long-term prospects are clear. Hunt adds that in the past three years £1 .2m has been spent on network safety and £750,000 on refurbishment.
Ryder's Coventry depot is going for VOSAS Authorised Testing Facility status; no other Ryder depots will follow that route until Coventry's experience is judged to be a success.
