merger talks, speculated to be with Nightfreight, have collapsed amid warnings from the beleaguered company that it will post a loss for the first half of this year.
United Carriers announced on 24 February that it had been approached about a merger but had wanted to improve the terms before recommending a deal to shareholders. Discussions since then have lapsed and the company involved remains unnamed.
Chairman Doug Rogers says the cost and the disruption to services caused to United Carriers, sparked by its move towards becoming a next-day carrier, have been more severe than he had first thought.
Hodgson, who will head the parcels division, has previously worked with Parceline and Securicor.
