AN 0-LICENCE granted to a convicted drug dealer in the Republic of Ireland has been discussed in the Irish Parliament.
The Irish Road Haulage Association ()RNA) says it is concerned about the granting of a licence to an individual under such circumstances" and has requested a meeting with Noel Dempsey, the Irish transport mlnister.
Vincent Caulfield, the president of the IRHA, says: The Department of Transport seems to be ignoring its own policy guidelines by issuing a road haulage licence last September to this individual."
The hauler at the centre of this matter was given a five-year jail term for drugs offences, Brian Cowen, the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister), responded in the Dail (Parliament) to a question asked by the opposition leader Enda Kenny, last week.
Kenny asked in what circumstances a road haulage licence would be allocated to a convicted drug trafficker.
Cowen replied that he intended to establish what changes might be needed to improve the system in the light of this case.
