• HGV traffic in West Wales could face a 60-mile detour if funds cannot be found for the strengthening of the Pont Twrch bridge on the A482 trunk road between Lampeter and Llandovery.
Tests carried out in readiness for the introduction of the 40tonne limit found that the bridge was so weak that it could only safely carry 7.5 tonnes, although heavy traffic uses it every day.
Carrnarthenshire Highways director Robert Sully has appealed to the Welsh Office for funding for repairs. If the funding is not forthcoming the bridge might have to be closed. bridge to fail the structural tests is on the A484 at Pemberton Arms, Burry Port. That bridge can only safely carry 32 tonnes, although there is an alternative route available through the town centre.
The majority of bridges on lesser roads have yet to be tested, said Sully.
