• A Foden dealer is demonstrating its faith in Caterpillar's electronically managed engines by specifying them for its own haulage fleet, Nottingham based Charnwood Truck Services was so impressed by the feedback from a series of electronic engine clinics, particularly on fuel economy, that it has specified the 10.3-litre 365hp Caterpillar C-10 engine for the fleet operated by its haulage arm T Hayden Ilardstaff.
Hardstaff operates 56 rigids and artics including 10 Alphas—all but two of the fleet are Fodens. Twelve of the Fodens are equipped with the C10. Group chairman Trevor Fletcher believes both Cummins and Caterpillar electronic engines offer similar benefits, but that the Cat has the edge on fuel economy monitoring.
Charnwood's clinics provide analysis of data logged from operators' engines. As well as engine diagnostic data, the analysis includes driving techniques. The more common fuel wasting problems identified include engines left idling for long periods and late braking resulting from over aggressive driving.
