The general pressure on the refrigerated sector has also been reflected in the fortunes of the equipment manufacturers this year. Thermo King and Carrier TranscoId both pulled out of the 2009 CV Show — which was eventually cancelled altogether — in November last year. And in December, Thermo King cut 110 jobs from its factory in Galway, Ireland.
Another feature of the refrigerated haulage sector in the last year has been some consolidation of third-party operators, most notably Wincanton's merger of its chilled work with Culina, which had itself merged with Baylis Logistics a year previously. Both Culina and Wincanton argued that merging their operations would give them more strength and enable them to give better service because of increased volumes.
Other mergers included Fricor, which already owned Somerset temperature-controlled specialist Peter Green, buying its rival Stotts Transport for an undisclosed sum in January. Similar to Wincanton and Culina, the larger entity was said to represent an opportunity to sell an increased range of services to customers. Between them the two companies run just over 70 trucks.
