EU member states. It forms part of the Road Safety Action Plan, which was launched by the EC in 2003 through its Directorate General for Energy and Transport (DG TREN).
It brings together Industry, public authorities and the public to promote road safety. By June 2609, 1,450 entities had signed a road safety commitment similar to those shown In the 'industry' panel (see opposite page). The commitment lasts three years and might be renewed.
Europe-wide figures from 2007 reveal 1.3 million accidents, 42,500 deaths and 1.6 million injuries. The cost of such accidents accounts for 2% of European gross domestic product. Young people are most at risk — 20% of road fatalities affect victims aged 18 to 25. (Source: CARE EU database on road accidents 2007)
