While intermodal transport remains the prerogative of a select band of operators, increasing environmental pressure could result in millions of tonnes of soft fruit and vegetables carried by trucks across the Continent taking a detour on to the rails.
However, while the catalyst for change could be legislative rather than economic, before long-haul temperature-controlled truck operators go down the intermodal road, they'll have to have the business in place, and, above all, complete faith in their rail partners to make the switch.
