Electric Welding Outfit
A Self-contained Outfit Providing a Range of Welding Current from 30 to 250 Amperes AN interesting development in electric welding equipment is the singleoperative, portable a.c. plant for which Johnson and „Phillips, Ltd., Victoria Way, Charlton, London,. S.E.7, is responsible. The accompanying illus.: tration shows the general appearance of the outfit, which measures 3 ft, 3 ins. by 1 ft. 10 ins. by 3 ft. 1 in. high, and weighs 530 lb,
The set consists, essentially, of an aircooled moving coil regulating transformer with an auxiliary choke coil connected in series to give the lower current range.
• Rotation of the operating handle causes the primary windjng to move towards, or away from, the secondary winding, so that the inherent reactance _ 6f the transformer is variable over a • wide range. When required, a weatherproof condenser, for power factor improvement; can be accommodated at the end of the unit. As it is not included as standard, it is necessary to specify that it is required when ordering.
The design of this 'plant allows for a smoothly variable and continuous hand • welding current of 30 amperes up to 250 amperes, in two ranges, by manna: control using the standard 5-yd. length of cable. The ranges are from 30 to 61:1 amperes and 60 to 250 amperes approximately. Welding rating is 22.5 Eva. and the continuous B.S. rating, based upon a diversity factor of 70 per cent., is 15.75 Kva.
A 60-ampere, .double-pole, ironclad switch is included to insulate the transiormer from the primary supply, so complying with the appropriate B.S. No, 638/1941 and Home Office Regula. tions. The' outfit is suitable for connection across two lines of a three-phase, 50-cycle supply, and it can be used (0 the following a.c. supply voltages:440, 420, 400, 380, 220, 210, 200 and 190.
