Hans Tauscher, managing director of Mercedes-Benz (UK) Ltd, has grave reservations about politicians — and well he might have. As he pointed out at the launch of the splendid new range of light-middleweight vehicles, Members of Parliament do not have to prove their capabilities before they are elected to sit in judgment on others who know better.
Using an analogy (on which he had done his homework under the tutelage of Erik Johnson {head of public relations), he likened professional engineers to the Players and politicians to the Gentlemen. He has obviously never listened to Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons.
Hans' case is that politicians should be guided by experts before they stamp their clumsy feet all over the motor industry. Then, he thinks, more thought might be given to the practical consequences of some new legislative requirements.
