1:0 Essex police are warning owners of Mercedes trucks to be especially vigilant following a rash of thefts in recent weeks for shipment to Malta, Greece, Australia and New Zealand.
• Haulier Hirmoin of Wakefield was fined £6,500 for a trailer with faulty breaks, not having an 0-licence and having the tacho switched off. The faults were discovered after a multiple pile-up.
• The dispute between more than 100 drivers and the management at Consett, Co Durham-based Elddis Transport has been called off. The drivers accepted the 2,4 increase in meals allowance, and 50p on overnight stops.
• The discussion paper on the future of the Post Office, due this week, will reveal how the Government proposes to implement the £1bn sell-off of 51% of the Royal Mail and Parcelforce.
• Independent parcels and express mail company Business Post, floated a year ago, has announced pre-tax profits of £5.3m. The 26 % improvement has continued into the first quarter of this year.
Plans to launch a new Pembroke-to-Ireland ferry service have been shelved by Milford Haven Port Authority until it receives assurances that it will not be disrupted by strikes.
