THE SCOTTISH EXECUTIVE has approved a third road bridge over the River Forth, near the existing Kincardine Bridge.
The new bridge is expected to cost up to £120m but ScottishTransport Minister Nicol Stephen promises it will be initially toll-free.
Ministers gave their provisional backing to the project three years ago; a public inquiry found in its favour at the end of last year.
Stephen says the bridge will "help tackle congestion by improving journeys across the Forth and will provide a valuable boost to the local economy".
But the 1.2km bridge will be single carriageway, and some operators fear it will do nothing to alleviate local traffic jams.
