from renewable vegetable sources and mixed with standard diesel has brought into question their effect on warranty. On the whole, operators are safe if they stick to manufacturers' guidelines.
The Diesel Fuel Injection Equipment Manufacturers (DFIEM), whose members include Delphi, Bosch, Siemens VDO, Denso and Stanadyne, is happy with biofuels, provided a maximum of 5% makes up any fuel for diesel engines. It warns that using more and inferiorquality biodiesel fuel will cause engine damage.
Because vegetable-based diesel is a solvent, manufacturers are concerned that in too high a concentration it can compromise engine seals.
DFIEMS recommendations meet the quality standards set by the EU under BS EN 590. Light CV and truck manufacturers have agreed that use of up to 5% won't invalidate any warranty.
