A FINAL DATE for the introduction of digital smartcard tachographs finally seems to have been decided on, according to the Freight Transport Association.
It says sources in Brussels indicate that the European Commission will publish the relevant regulations in its Official Journal on 12 April. triggering the 20-day process making the digitachs a legal necessity for all trucks over 3.5 tonnes registered after 2 May.
Spokesman Geoff Dossetter reports: "Now it's quite clear that it's going to be May, operators should consider their position and make plans accordingly.
Our big concern is that operators begin the training process, not just for drivers but for managers and workshop staff as well.
"It's nice to finally have some clarity and know where we stand, which hasn't always been the case over the last five years," he adds.
However, some uncertainty over the implementation date still persists. with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders suggesting a 5 May launch.
