• Fifteen housewives in the north east of England are travelling more than 6,000 miles between them on buses in a bid to improve the region's services.
The marathon is part of a survey organized by an Anglo-American team of planners, and backed by Government departments, local authorities, and bus companies in the region.
The women are part-time market researchers and their job is to spend six hours a day riding on buses between Newcastle upon Tyne and Morpeth (Northumberland) and Consett (Co. Durham) to check on the views of the passengers.
An official at the survey headquarters in Gateshead (Co. Durham). said: "It means sore feet for the women, who have to stand up most of the time, handing out and collecting forms. We hope eventually to build up a complete picture of bus services in the region with further surveys, so we can make accurate recommendations for the future."
