A combined visible red and fluorescent dye penetrant process —Ardrox 9 VF 1—evolved by Ardrox Ltd. is a sensitive method of detecting defects that show on the surface of metals and ceramics. Such defects include forging and welding faults, porosity and shrinkage in castings, heat treatment and welding cracks, and operational stress and fatigue failures. Ardrox 9 VF 1 may also be used for leak detection.
Used as a red dye system, the process is said to be as sensitive as a conventional visible penetrant, with the added advantage that it provides increased sensitivity when exposed to ultra-violet light.
The process was originally developed for the inspection of areas in submarines with minimal ventilation and illumination. It is now available commercially in bulk or as a portable aerosol pack for local inspection on large structures or in confined installations.
