INFLATION and high staff costs — these take the blame for a 20 per cent fares rise requested by West Yorks Passenger Transport Executive, The provisions against inflation made in the estimates earlier this year having already run out.
This rise, if approved by the Traffic Commissioners would provide an extra £8.2m, more than enough to cover the additional labour and inflation costs. But it will be little enough to make up both the unexpected increases and the loss of £3.2m forecast when the existing fare scale was approved last year.
It is understood that bus crews and engineering staff already have a wage claim in the pipeline, which could push up fares yet again towards the end of the year.
