• Trucks are more efficient than ever before, reflecting the industry's campaign to reduce its environmental impact, says the Freight Transport Association.
According to the Dots report Transport for Goods 1991-2001, there was a 10% reduction In the levels of empty running, falling to 26.4% of vehicle journeys, with a 2% fall in 2001 alone.
The ETA's chief economist, Simon Chapman, says: "This reduction is good news for the environment and Europea competitiveness, with the deve opment of super-clean, super lean and super-quiet vehicle which are both environmentall and road-wear friendly
"We are increasingly seemn economic growth being gener ated without any increase i freight transport demand," hi adds. "This level of efficienc underlines the achievement i the reduction of empty runnin figures, leaving more in thi tank for operators."
