• Autoglass is calling on the government to introduce formal standards and a watchdog body to regulate the windscreen replacement industry. It has also begun lobbying the Health and Safety Executive to implement a recognised register of windscreen fitting technicians.
The moves are both part of a new campaign to raise awareness of windscreens as a crucial safety feature. Autoglass says it is not widely known that windscreens can provide up to 30% of a car's structural strength and could prevent vehicle occupants being crushed in the event of a rollover. The company points out that passenger airbags often rely on the windscreen too, as they inflate directly against it.
