Alter many years of exemption, farmers have now joined the rest of Britain by coming under the Agricultural Waste Regulations. As a result they can no longer use farm tips or dumps, or burn plastics and other materials.
There is still a degree of flexibility, and farmers have until May 2007 to comply with the new rules and to register for any agricultural waste exemptions.
Agriculture, the largest waste-prodi sector of the UK economy after constr tion, offers hauliers a potentially large market. The main challenge is collect relatively small amounts of hazardous waste from remote locations.
