At a general meeting of the Institution of Automobile Engineers, to be held in the Hall of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, Victoria Embankmeat, London, W.C.2, on November 3, at 7,45 p.m., Dr. G. A. Rohr, of Daimler-Benz A.G., Stuttgart, will read a paper entitled " Various Locations of Engine and Final Drive for Automobiles." The views of one of Germany's leading automobile engineers should be of special interest.
Railways Order More Mechanical Horses.
Karrier Motors, Ltd., Luton, has received an order, through Rootes, Ltd., for 53 Cob Junior tractors for the Great Western Railway Co. This type of tractor incorporates a four-cylindered engine, developing 47 b.h.p., and is mounted on 23-in. by 5-in. pneumatic tyres. The turning radius is as low as 9 ft. and the automatic coupling and brake gear enable the tractor to operate with a variety of quickly detachable trailers.
Insurance—Beware of Misrepresentation.
Criticism of insurance agents, who are alleged to misrepresent facts to vehicle owners, was made by the Aberdare Stipendiary Magistrate when dealing with a case in, which a defendant was fined 20s. anclo5s-a costs for-using an inainsured rhotOr vehicle.
The evidence was-that the defendant waS found to he carrying goods in his car. Be had a comprehensive 'policy of insurance, but this did not entitle him to carry goods.
The defendant claimed that when he took the comprehensive policy of insurance he was assured by the agent that he was -covered for goods carrying.
The Stipendiary (Mr. J. Bowen Davies, K.C.) said that from his own experience at the Bar, he knew that agents mislead and some say anything in order to sell policies.
Precautions Fail to Prevent "Hours " Breaches.
Instances in which precautions by the defendant had failed to prevent " hours " breaches came before Bradford City Police Court, on Tuesday. when Bradford Dyers Association, Ltd., Well Street, pleaded guilty in 15 cases. In each case a fine of V was imposed.
Far the prosecution, Mr. J. Wurzel said that the offences were discovered when the traffic records of the Bradford Dyers Association were examined.
Mr. G. W. Wrangham, for the defence, said that the company pleaded guilty because, although it had taken many steps to obviate such a state of affairs, it had not apparently taken every conceivable precaution. Arrangements were made whereby drivers would be relieved when their working day was finished. The Association had now instituted a system whereby all the log sheets were individually examined, and was inflicting all penalties possible on drivers who broke the rules.
The Stipendiary Magistrate remarked B22 that the defendant had never previously been found guilty •of such offences. As special arrangements were being made to prevent a recurrence purely nominal fines would be imposed.
In the list of prizewinners at the C.M.U.A. Manchester parade, held on October 17, amongst the placings for drivers' prizes, the third prize in the class for oilers was awarded to Messrs. W. Mukaster and Sons, of Crewe, and not as stated in last week's issue. MORE VEHICLES DELETED.
Further decisions involving the deletion of vehicles from A licences have been made by the Yorkshire Licensing Authority. He has ordered the deletion of one vehicle (1 ton 17 cwt.) from the licence of Mrs. Maggie Myers, trading as Myers Garage, Dailey, near Harrogate, and the removal of a 1-ton vehicle from the licence of Mr. John Hewson and MT. Alfred Hewson, trading as Hewson Brothers, Howden,
