A 2.3-litre diesel engine was fitted to the Peugeot 504 rear wheel-drive pick-up we tested in April. Peugeot was expecting improved performance and fuel consumption from the larger capacity engine, and we were able to confirm this with returns of 8.91it/100km (31.7mpg) over the CM light van route when fully laden.
Competitively priced against other one-ton pick-ups, the 504 gives a generous payload of 1.25 tonnes with ample tolerance between axles for sensible load distribution. Maximum loads settle the rear springs well down. Large diameter wheels and limited slip differential provide for a restricted off-road capability. In-cab storage space is an obvious area for improvement but in other respects, the interior is comfortable and practical with the exception of the vinyl floor covering.
