RF's C-Series eight-wheeled er powered by a Rolls-Royce 51_ was tested round CM's gshot circuit. Rated at .5kW (261bhp), the 12.2-litre me (the most powerful of :e offered in this chassis) proc e d an unexciting ilit/100km (5.38mpg).
he nine-speed Fuller rangenge gearbox driving through 4.96 to 1 rear axle gave a deability of 1 in 4. Maximum iue of 1,101Nm (812 lbft) at 1,200rpm allowed the vehicle to lug well down. For best consumption Rolls recommends that engine speeds are kept below 1,700rpm.
But with an overdrive top gear of 0.74 to 1 and geared speed of 100km/h (62mph) it was not well matched to this slow speed route where an average speed of only 35.6km/h (22.1mph) was achieved.
There was a lot of gear changing which was made less wearing by the light clutch and accelerator. Norde rubber suspension gave a well controlled ride on and off road and body roll was minimal.
Conditions even in the worst of the off-road section were such that the diff lock was never needed.
The C-Series cab is less than sumptuous but the driver's suspension seat added to driving comfort. Visibility is good all round and ample under-cab insulation lessened the noise.
