Scania's eight-wheeler, the P82 8x2 RSI, provided a useful combination of power and drive line specification. The DSi8 7.8litre engine is both turbocharged and charge-cooled and gives a power to weight ratio of 5.6kW/tonne (77 bhp/ton) at 30 tons gvw.
Maximum power is achieved at a relatively high engine speed of 2,400rpm, but for economy Scania says that revs are best confined between 1,200 and 2,000rpm. Driving to these instructions, we returned a fuel consumption of 50.36 lit/100km (5.61mpg) with a payload of 19.82 tonnes.
Entry to the low mounted P cab is higher than it first appears but three steps make it easy. Starting from rest on and off road could be accomplished easily using second gear, and using first a 1 in 4 gradient presented no difficulty at all. With different size tyres fitted front and rear the choice of a spare can be uncertain.
Numerous greasing points included in the design of the rear suspension can only add to the life expectancy of the threaded pins and bushes.
